# Individual Trauma Therapy

## Mississauga / Oakville / Toronto

In a steady therapeutic relationship, you can begin to understand how trauma still lives in your body, emotions, and relationships. Therapy is available in both English and Mandarin.

## You may be noticing:

- What happened in the past is over, but your body and emotions still react as if it is happening now.
- You feel tense, alert, or anxious so often that true rest is hard to reach.
- Small triggers can bring up strong reactions, and it takes a long time to feel settled again.
- You know a relationship pattern is not good for you, yet you keep returning to the same familiar cycle.
- You are used to taking care of everyone else first, and it is hard to tell what you need.

## Individual therapy and trauma treatment can help you:

- Understand the connection between emotions, body responses, and trigger patterns.
- Build a steadier sense of safety so daily life is not held together only by vigilance.
- Work through the present impact of fear, shame, grief, anger, and helplessness.
- Recognize the parts of you that have been protecting you for a long time, and understand why they work this way.
- Rebuild boundaries, a steadier sense of self, and more stable relationship patterns at a pace that fits you.

## How individual therapy and trauma treatment work:

- ### Therapy begins with understanding your current struggles, including trigger patterns, relationship experiences, body responses, and the support you already have.
- If you are dealing with complex trauma, childhood trauma, or attachment trauma, we usually begin by strengthening stability, safety, and internal resources.
- When you are ready, we can use EMDR, IFS, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, or relational therapy to work with deeper memories, emotions, and body responses.
- The pace of therapy is adjusted to what you can hold. With complex and early trauma, slowing down often leads to deeper and more lasting change.
- Sessions are available in either English or Mandarin, and you can move between both languages if that feels more natural.

Trauma does not always come from one major event. Long-term emotional neglect, unstable family dynamics, repeated invalidation, or painful experiences in important relationships can continue to shape your body, emotions, and capacity for closeness.

## What trauma therapy is

Trauma therapy is not only about repeating the story of what happened. Many people have already talked through their experiences many times, yet their body still moves automatically into tension, avoidance, appeasing, or shutdown in certain situations.

In therapy, we work together to understand how those experiences still live in your body, emotions, relationships, and sense of self. I draw from relational, trauma-focused, and body-based approaches according to what you need, rather than expecting everyone to work in the same way.

## What we work with in trauma therapy

### 1. Complex trauma and CPTSD

Complex trauma often grows out of long-term, repeated relational experiences such as emotional neglect, criticism, humiliation, control, or an unstable home environment. It can leave you struggling to trust others, hold boundaries, or feel your own worth well into adulthood.

### 2. Childhood and attachment trauma

Some trauma does not come from obvious violence. It can come from not receiving enough understanding, comfort, or response over a long period of time. In adult life, that may show up as people-pleasing, fear of conflict, fear of being left, or difficulty expressing what you truly need.

### 3. Relationship trauma and betrayal trauma

Betrayal, emotional abuse, repeated neglect, sudden breakups, or divorce can disrupt a person's basic sense of safety in relationships and within themselves. Therapy helps you understand those reactions rather than forcing yourself to move on before you are ready.

### 4. Immigration, culture, and trauma-related stress

For immigrants, Chinese clients, and cross-cultural families, distress can come from family relationships, cultural expectations, and migration experiences at the same time. I offer therapy in Mandarin and English so you can talk about family, identity, responsibility, shame, and loss in the language that feels most natural.

## The trauma therapy approaches I use

**Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR)** helps you work with experiences that still bring strong emotional and physical reactions when enough safety and stability are in place. EMDR is not only about the memory itself. It also looks at how those experiences continue to affect your feelings, beliefs, and nervous system today.

**Internal Family Systems (IFS)** understands the different parts of your inner world as a system that once protected you, rather than as problems to eliminate. We can explore the parts that fear abandonment, push you too hard, or do not want to trust anymore, and understand how they continue to shape your life now.

**Sensorimotor Psychotherapy** focuses on how trauma lives in the body, such as chronic tension, shallow breathing, a racing heart, sudden freezing, or a body that still feels unsafe even when you know you are safe. Body-based work helps you notice these responses and slowly build new ways of regulating them.

**Relational therapy** pays close attention to safety, trust, boundaries, and pace within the therapeutic relationship. Trauma often happens in relationship, and healing often unfolds in relationship too.

## What you can expect

**Phase 1: Building safety and understanding your current difficulties.** We look at what you are living with now, what feels most difficult, how your body and emotions respond, and what changes you hope therapy will support.

**Phase 2: Stabilization and resource building.** Before moving into deeper processing, we may focus on emotion regulation, body awareness, self-soothing, identifying triggers, and building boundaries. With complex trauma, slow is often what helps most.

**Phase 3: Processing trauma.** Once enough stability and internal resources are in place, we can consider whether EMDR, IFS, Sensorimotor Psychotherapy, or another approach fits the next stage of the work.

**Phase 4: Rebuilding life and relationships.** The goal is not only to reduce symptoms. It is to help you develop a steadier sense of self, clearer boundaries, and a life with more room for choice.

## Why choose Leaf Light Therapy

This work integrates relational therapy, EMDR, IFS, and body-based approaches while also paying attention to how culture and immigration shape stress, relationships, and identity. You can move between Mandarin and English and speak about complex experiences in the language that feels closest to you.

## Frequently asked questions about trauma therapy

## 1. How do I know whether trauma therapy is right for me?

You do not need a formal trauma diagnosis before reaching out. If past experiences continue to affect your emotions, body, relationships, self-worth, or daily life, trauma-focused therapy may be worth considering.

## 2. Do I have to tell my therapist everything that happened?

No. Therapy moves at your pace. We focus first on building enough safety, and then decide together what feels possible to explore.

## 3. Does trauma therapy always mean talking about childhood?

Not always. Some people come in because of a recent betrayal, breakup, accident, or period of intense stress. We begin with what feels most urgent now. At the same time, recent pain can sometimes connect with older childhood wounds, so those experiences may become part of the work naturally.

## 4. Is EMDR right for everyone?

Not necessarily. Whether EMDR fits depends on your current level of stability, your treatment goals, and your specific history. Some people need more time to build safety and internal resources before trauma processing begins. With complex trauma, moving too quickly can become overwhelming.

## 5. Can I still come to trauma therapy if I do not think my trauma was severe?

Yes. Many people would not describe their experiences as trauma, yet past relationships, family environments, or long-term stress still shape how they live now. Trauma therapy offers a way to understand and integrate those experiences without asking you to label yourself first.

## 6. Is there a difference between trauma therapy in Mandarin and in English?

The therapy itself does not change because of the language, but for many Mandarin-speaking clients, it feels easier to talk about family, childhood, relationships, and emotions in a familiar language. You can also move freely between Mandarin and English.

## 7. How long does trauma therapy take?

There is no fixed length that fits everyone. The pace depends on the complexity of your experiences, your current life circumstances, your treatment goals, and what feels manageable for you. Complex trauma often requires a longer period of stabilization and processing.

## 8. Can I do trauma therapy online?

Yes, when online therapy is clinically appropriate, secure virtual sessions are available. Online work can be a good fit if your schedule is full, you live far from the office, or you feel more comfortable starting in a familiar space.

## 9. Will trauma therapy make me feel worse?

Working with trauma does not mean forcing yourself to relive everything at once. Therapy is paced according to your capacity and current stability. If deeper processing is not right for a certain stage, we can stay with stabilization, support, and what you are living with now.

## 10. Where should I start?

If you are unsure whether trauma therapy fits what you are going through, you can begin with a free 15-minute consultation. We can talk about what is happening right now and what kind of support may fit best.
